Almeda University Regional or Private Accreditation

Almeda University Regional or Private Accreditation

Almeda University is privately accredited - not regionally accredited.

What does that mean?

Regional accreditation offers several benefits. First, US servicemen looking for G.I. Bill support will not be able to have the government pay for a university that is not regionally accredited. Second, government employees that are required to have college degrees will most likely be required to hold a degree from a regionally accredited university. Some private employers will also require applicants to have received degrees from -- usually private employers that do government contracting work will require employees to have regionally accredited degrees.

Why does regional accreditation exist?

Many years ago, the concept of regional accreditation existed to ensure that academic institutions met certain standards of excellence. Unfortunately, the lines between academic excellence and non-regionally accredited universities have been blurred.  The real issue here with regional accreditation has less to do with the academic quality of the university and more to do with anticompetitive business practices of the accredited institutions.

Since competition in higher education has gotten so intense, regional accreditation can now act to control and regulate the "upstart" population of competitors. In 2010, Congress, the Department of Education, and the Department of Justice have been looking into this anticompetitive practice by higher education. However, it now appears this issue has been tabled due to budget constraints.

How does Almeda University's lack of regional accreditation affect its students?

The vast majority of Almeda University students have not been affected. With nearly 2,000 Almeda alumni corresponding daily on Almeda University's alumni LinkedIn group, it is clear that the vast majority of these alumni have achieved the same successes with their Almeda degree as they would have with a traditional regionally accredited degree. All alumni are encouraged to join and partake in the Almeda University LinkedIn group for alumni.
